Basic Information
| Overview
Lactose is a disaccharide sugar that is derived from the condensation of Galactose and Glucose, forming a glycosidic bond. Generally found in milk, Lactose is extracted from sweet or sour whey and is commonly used as a high-calorie sweetening additive in food. It was discovered in milk by Fabriccio Bartoletti in 1619.
Lactose Intolerance
People who are unable to digest significant amounts of Lactose suffer from a condition called Lactose Intolerance, when the person lacks a Lactase enzyme which breaks down Lactose into a form that can be absorbed into blood.
